DaVinci Artist Supply has a responsibilty to inform artists, teachers, and consumers about potential hazards that are inherent with using certain materials. For those Artists who use similar techniques and materials as the great masters, handling of hazardous materials is a must. DaVinci seeks to identify risks, in order to help our customers find materials that are safe and appropriate. When using hazardous materials, we want artists to be informed, so that they will handle the materials safely.
The Art and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI) is a non-profit trade association of art and craft materials manufacturers. Since 1940, ACMI has conducted a certification program in which product formulas are analyzed by a renowned toxicologist and certified by ACMI as non-toxic or properly labeled. ACMI certification also ensures compliance to state and federal labeling regulations.
DaVinci is concerned with artist safety. We are members of ACMI and we feel it is important that our products are certified under the ACMI program.
The Art & Creative Materials Institute, Inc. ACMI is an international association, composed of a diverse and involved membership, and is recognized as the leading authority on art and creative materials. Founded in 1936, ACMI was organized to assist its members in providing the public with art and creative materials for children and artists that are non-toxic. The Institutes members are art and creative material manufacturers, and currently there are over 210 members. Of the 60,000 art and creative material formulations evaluated to date, 100% of the childrens products and 85% of those meant for the adult artist are certified as non-toxic. All products in the program undergo extensive toxicological evaluation and testing before they are granted the right to bear the ACMI certification seals.
ACMI is dedicated to providing leadership, guidance and education to individuals, organizations, and society in general to achieve greater participation in art and creative related activities.
The new AP (Approved Product) Seal, with or without Performance Certification, identifies art materials that are safe and that are certified in a toxicological evaluation by a medical expert to contain no materials in sufficient quantities to be toxic or injurious to humans, including children, or to cause acute or chronic health problems. This seal is currently replacing the previous non-toxic seals: CP (Certified Product), AP (Approved Product), and HL Health Label (Non-Toxic) over a 10-year phase-in period. Such products are certified by ACMI to be labeled in accordance with the chronic hazard labeling standard, ASTM D 4236, and the U. S. Labeling of Hazardous Art Materials Act (LHAMA). Additionally, products bearing the AP Seal with Performance Certification or the CP Seal are certified to meet specific requirements of material, workmanship, working qualities, and color developed by ACMI and others through recognized standards organizations, such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Some products cannot attain this performance certification because no quality standard currently exists for certain types of products.
Products bearing the CL seal of the Art & Creative Materials Institute ("Caution Label") contain ingredients that are toxic or hazardous, but they can be used safely with appropriate caution. Materials that bear the CL seal should be used only by those persons who are able to read, understand, and follow suggested safety precautions for handling those materials. The Caution Label signifies that although the product contains a toxic element, it can be handled safely if the directions on the container or packaging are followed. Many such art products cannot be made non-hazardous, but are necessary for certain creative activities. When used in properly supervised and controlled conditions, they can be enjoyed with complete safety.
ACMI labeling indicates that a product has passed through a vigorous review process. Absense of the ACMI caution label does not indicate that a product is safe for use by children. Please read all labels and instructions before using art materials. Be an informed customer. We try to inform our customers of important health and safety issues, and we invite your comments on this issue.
California Proposition 65
The State of California requires clear and reasonable warnings on products and/or storage containers containing chemicals that have been shown to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Even if these products contain only trace levels of harmful chemicals, a warning is required by the State of California.
Manufacturers of certain products have included warnings pursuant to California Proposition 65, and caution is recommended when using products marked with the Prop 65 icon.
Materials Safety Data Sheets
A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that contains information on the potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity and environmental) and how to work safely with the chemical product. It is an essential starting point for the development of a complete health and safety program. It also contains information on the use, storage, handling and emergency procedures all related to the hazards of the material. The MSDS contains much more information about the material than the label. MSDSs are prepared by the supplier or manufacturer of the material. It is intended to tell what the hazards of the product are, how to use the product safely, what to expect if the recommendations are not followed, what to do if accidents occur, how to recognize symptoms of overexposure, and what to do if such incidents occur.
The Following information is provided by DaVinci Artist Supply under the Right-to-Know laws concerning toxic substances in the workplace.
You may request MSDS Sheets using one of the following methods:
1) Request an MSDS sheet by mail, phone, or fax, please specify the DaVinci products numbers and give a description of each product for which you need a data sheet. We will review your request and supply sheets for those items that require them. Direct your request to our MSDS Coordinator:
